Hero World Challenge Tournament History: The Hero World Challenge was launched in January 2000 by Tiger Woods and his father, Earl, through the TGR Foundation. Originally held at Grayhawk in Arizona, it quickly evolved into a limited-field invitational showcasing the world’s top 16 golfers and, later, expanding to 18 players when it began awarding Official World Golf Ranking points in 2008—marking its entry as a serious tournament on the PGA Tour schedule.

Tiger Woods created this event as a charitable initiative to support educational programs under the TGR Foundation. In its first year, Tom Lehman won the inaugural January event, and Davis Love III claimed the December 2000 edition as the field and prestige quickly grew. Over the years, it took on several names—Williams World Challenge, Target World Challenge, Chevron World Challenge, Northwestern Mutual Challenge—before Hero MotoCorp became its title sponsor in 2014.

A Star-Studded Invitational

With a small, elite field, the Hero World Challenge brings together four major champions, the defending titleholder, top world-ranked players, and sponsor exemptions—always featuring the host himself whenever possible. The tournament operates over 72 holes and does not have a cut, ensuring guests experience full competition.

Dominant Champions & Record Performances

Tiger Woods has had a major impact, claiming the title five times—and even setting course scoring records—dominance gained through refined golf and home-course knowledge. Jordan Spieth’s 262 in 2014 (−26) remains the tournament’s lowest 72-hole score. Other notable winners include Davis Love III, Graeme McDowell, Vijay Singh, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm, Henrik Stenson, Viktor Hovland, and Scottie Scheffler.

From Southern California to the Bahamas

After more than a decade at Sherwood CC in California and a transitional year at Isleworth in Florida, the tournament relocated in 2015 to Albany Golf Club, Bahamas. Since then, the lush island setting has become synonymous with the event’s luxury appeal. Albany’s 7,414-yard, par-72 course designed by Ernie Els became the stage for the 2023 tournament—won by Scottie Scheffler—continuing the tradition of excellence.

The Hero World Challenge remains firmly rooted in its charitable mission, raising substantial funds for the TGR Foundation, Tavistock Foundation, and Bahamas Youth Foundation—all tied together through sport, community, and education.

Continuing Legacy into 2025

Poised at the start of the PGA Tour season’s official fall swing, the event is scheduled for December 1–7, 2025. The invitation-only tournament will again draw 20 of the top-ranked golfers, combining high-stakes play with exclusive hospitality in the Bahamas.
